Picture Tips

Photographing Kids

The number one rule in photographing children, get on their level! Try photographing your child while on your hands and knees, kneeling, or while laying on your stomach. Not only will this provide a more flattering view of your child, but also helps to engage with them during your "photo shoot."

Photographing Babies

Because babies are immoble, they can be difficult to photograph. Try placing them on a wooly rug or baby blanket and lie beside them with your camera on the floor. This gives you a great opportunity to capture their big beautiful eyes, and again provides a more flattering view of baby.

Photographing Older Children

The best time to photograph older children is when they are doing something the really enjoy. Capture them drawing, singing, playing their favorite sport, or at the park on a swing.

Again, it is important to get down on their level, to see things from their perspective. Keep an eye out for especially candid moments, these sometimes make the best photos of all.

If your camera has a "continuous shooting" mode, you might give this a try when photographing kids on the move. It's often the 2nd, 3rd or even 4th photo in a series that is best, and can eliminate the "perfect picture if only they hadn't blinked phenomenon!"
